Hello Music Lovers! Sorry this is coming in late, but as you know bills have to be paid.
Karaoke was very interesting! Remember How I said that Karaoke could be like an American Idol Tryout “Live”. Last night a group of three gentlemen, if I should call them that as I think I should sang “Time after Time”. I thought the Grim Reaper had appeared. Actually he did appear but the voices were so dreadful he ran away!
Now right after that happened I gave up the hope of the night being a good night and just then someone stepped on stage and sang At Last by Etta James. Sad thing was I thought that it was the CD playing until she laughed. Another gentleman went up and sang a song by Ne-Yo and that went great! As I walked up and requested my “new song”, Gravity by John Mayer, it was not available. I cried and went home. Ok, I did not go home but I cried a little bit. I wound up singing A Change Gonna Come by Sam Cooke (My older brother, ok, ok but I really love his music. Tell you why later), Hotel California by The Eagles, later on I sang Faithfully by Journey. At this point I think I had no sense of Time and space almost because I was having so much fun.
I am not sure what they are called in your neck of the woods but around the Inland Empire, CA the DJ for Karaoke is called a “KJ” and I think “DL” is one of the best. He is currently working on being the feature KJ for Voice of Kelechi Ukoha.

Kelechi,
I have never been Karaoking before. Part of the reason is because I am shy and number two, my voice is terrible. I admire and like watching other people sing. Do you have any tips to overcome this?

First Amaete I would like to welcome you to “Voice of Kelechi Ukoha”! In my earlier post The Great Event called Karaoke I did leave a few tips about stage fright. It is not easy to overcome even though loved ones have a tendency of “belittling” the gripping fear that can overwhelm one once on stage. Here are a few tips;
1. Imagine you are singing to a room filled with babies/bunnies/puppies. There are not judgmental and love any source of entertainment.
2. Do not look at anyone in the crowd. It’s Karaoke, just focus on the screen with the words.
3. Remember, most people in a bar are drinking alcoholic beverages. Their perception makes everything seem pleasant (unless you are wearing a cop uniform!).
4. Karaoke is for everybody, amateurs with very few (if at all any, definitely wannabes! Like me) professionals, to come out and have a good time. Unless otherwise stated, not a competition, Have fun
5. Do a song no one would expect you to do. Guys, do a song by Madonna/Britney Spears (oops I did it again) and ladies you can try something like Sir Mix-a-lot to get things going. It is after all Karaoke, so have fun with it!

As a fellow person with a “terrible” voice…I have only been to Karaoke once – to Brass Monkey in Feb 08. I was suckered into the first song by a friend but I refused to do it without an Entourage. After a while we had the whole crowd singing “Y-M-C-A”…I must say if I go again..it will have to be with a group…that way my voice can hide behind the others LOL
